Merlin Magix, R4.0. Customer calls from one extension to another. Can the called extension transfer the calling extension to another extension?

Yes, that has always been a feature in the system.

It won't work. Do I have to program it? I tried numerous extension, when I press the transfer button the caller hears dial tone.

What phones are they using and how are they programmed? What mode is the system configured, hybrid or key? You might want to check the Feature Reference Guide document.

I'm not sure I understand the question. The post title mentions Merlin Messaging, but the example you give sounds like "the person called needs to transfer the call to a yet a different extension".

Whether answered live or by Merlin Messaging, the caller CAN be transferred elsewhere. The only time I see this being a problem is if the called extension has a "transfer only" mailbox or no mailbox at all.

retiredtelco - A transfer can only be accomplished for outside calls. I think you are asking if a call from one extension to another can be transferred to yet another extension. To prove this try to put the call from the extension on hold and you will get dial tone because the system sees it as a hangup. I was told years ago from then Lucent support that this feature was not available on the Legend (earlier release) and I can find nothing in the Magix manuals about transferring inside calls to other extensions. Much easier to tell the caller to dial the other extension.

Not true...not true. You absolutely CAN transfer an internal call to another internal extension number. It's a stupid way to handle an inside call, but who am I to judge.

Here's the thing though: IF any party involved has bridged appearances or foolishly eliminated the Outgoing Only appearance of their station, there will be restrictions as to what they can do.

It helps to remember that Transfer and Conference are fraternal twins...everything is the same until the last minute (one has you "throw the call over the fence" to someone else, the other passes the call control to someone else. But up until that point, both calls are essentially the same. Next remember that the Legend/Magix switch fabric is constrained--per extension--to two simultaneous inside and two outside calls.

IF the user has already exhausted those conditions with a conference call, bridged appearance...whatever, THEN the answer is NO, a transfer is impossible.

Outside of that, an "ordinary" inside call to another extension ABSOLUTELY CAN be transferred to another inside extension.

Thanks Tim, what you stated was sort of what I was thinking about the way the Legend/Magix logic works in relation to switch mode and phone programming.
