Hey everyone!
I'm new here and found this board while searching for solutions. Seem like there are many knowledgeable
professional on here. I hope that I might be able to get some advice. Anyway...

A couple of nights ago a storm came through. I came into work and it was very quiet...the phones
were dead. I tried power cycling the system to no avail. The power supply has the green light
still on and I opened it to check for any damage. It looks fine, though I have not checked the voltages
yet. Is it possible to have bad/missing voltage and the green light still be on?

When I flip the power on the red light will only flash for a second on the CKE5 processor. It seems that
the processor is dead. I looked over the board and there are many spots on the board that look corroded. It
looks like almost like water damage or some of the components have burned up leaving a residue on the board.
I'm thinking the board is dead, having the storm might be just a coincidence, because the damage doesn't look
like it happened overnight. I ordered a new board off ebay. Looks like making a backup is impossible now.
There is a 4mb upgrade card installed in the slot, would that be any help for me? How hard is it to make an
install from scratch? There seems to be plenty documentation on the system at least. I also ordered the
components needed to use winSPM. I really want to get this going again without spending a fortune on a
new system. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello- if the auto backup was turned on the system does a backup on the 1st of every month on to the flash card. Is the processor the same software load as the original?

Thanks, that is excellent news! Hopefully the backup was turned on. The processor that I ordered has
all the same numbers on it "CKE5 617S33-K". Is there a way to check the software version
when the board is dead? I'm guessing I will need to make sure the versions match or convert
the backup to the appropriate version with winSPM. Is there a way to copy the file off the flash
card without being able to dial in?

Yes, that can be done with the MAIN CONSOLE. Menu > System Program > Start > System > Back-Restore > RESTORE > Then select the Auto Back File with the date as close to the FAILURE as possible.

That should do it..........

Thanks for all the help so far.

I have the new CPU installed and working, just need to load the backup from the old PCMCIA card.
WinSPM is working great and I'm able to navigate the system fine.

I ran into a problem. I followed the instructions from Merlinman and I got the following message.

"Restore failure
Restore is canceled
Board mismatch between control unit and file"

The new board says "Magix 1.0 v6.0" when check from a phone. I am unsure of what version my backup from the old system is.
How can I get the backup files off the PCMCIA card to check the version of my old backup? Would this work?
I'm open to other suggestions if there is a proper procedure. Thanks much!

You're not going to be able to pull the backup file off of the PCMCIA card, and the conversion utility in WinSPM works on files saved when you backup the system to your PC

"Board mismatch between control unit and file" usually means that the cards in cabinet do not match the cards in the memory image on the backup card, not a release mismatch.

You might try unseating all of the cards in the system, except the processor, and see if the restore will work. You may need to program the system in surrogate mode first, to set it to Hybrid/PBX before restoring.

Failing that, you might be programming from scratch.

It would be too easy if I could just copy it off the card to the PC and convert...

I followed the instructions and was able to get it to come up in surrogate mode and switched it to Hybrid/PBX.
It failed with a different message. It was a generic "Restore failure" with no additional information or any
note saying incorrect version. I decided to give up and start programming.

I was able to get the basics working for now, which is good enough for our small business.
It seems that the voice mail board is out too... It's the Merlin Messaging R2 with a 4 port card.
The lights flash when it's powered on, but the status light is not solid. The system status LED
flashes green for 5 seconds and then off for about 12 seconds. Any hope for it? From what I read
it should just come on and I should be able to connect to it at ext 770 or 777.

Well, you're going to have to program the active ports of the voicemail system into the hunt group that you want to use.

Thanks for the clear instructions. They were much better than the others I had.
I followed them and everything looks good, but it just rings endlessly when I dial VM.
None of the other LEDs are lighting up on the board, I'm thinking that it's dead.
I'm gonna order a new board next and give that a shot.

I would guess that through the calling group number, you're hearing ring-beep. Call each port's extension number, and see if they answer that way.
