I am installing a (used) Merlin Legend Mail Release 3.0 Multi-Language system and it is not answering calls placed directly to the extensions on the 012 ports. The 012 a 517G vintage 3. I can place a telephone call to same prts and answer w/analog device (internal ring gen. works). I have no indicator lights (red or green) on any of the VM port cards either (while ringing or idle).

How can I default the system to factory settings (including the passwords) and access the system using the RMD. I have not been able to obtain any GOOD maintenance documents. I have the Merlin Legend Mail R3.0 Installation, Programming, and Maintenance Manual and the Upgrade manual of the same and neither of them go into enough detail. Any help would be greatly appreciated as the ATT/Lucent/AVAYA documentation I have is insufficient.

If you have no lights on the Voice Mail cards even when idle, you have major problems with the Mail unit. The LEDs should be green when idle.

You can connect to the serial port with a null-modem cable. Press return, and use the serial number as the password. You cannot program the unit this way, but you can get reports. You can also run a couple of tests on the memory and voice card ports.

You can also capture the boot up sequence if you are hooked up before power-on, maybe this will reveal the problem.

Unfortunatly, you may need to find a service center for your voice mail unit. I believe Matt Wray is one, perhaps he will post, or look for him in other threads.

Casallini,

TTT is right I feel with his recommendations.

As Lucent/Avaya voice mail repair specialists ... we find that when your port lights fail to pass from red to green during startup and initialization of the software and system, that the voice mail mod is typically defective and needing repair. There are many reasons why you might not be getting your MM R3.0 to green light, so I recommend you consider the repair option by someone professional who can run diagnostics and find/fix the source of your MM R3.0's problems.

Below is a copy of the startup file. The green and red LEDs on the line cards toggle when the system powers.

Is there a way to default the password. It must have been changed by the previous owner.

Casalini,

Thanks for the detailed info about your MM R3.0. I still would say that the problem is a combination of a defective Brooktrout voice card and corrupted software. The password wouldn't have any bearing or correlation to the problems you have mentioned and the errors the startup log reports.

My recomendation is again to send your MM R3.0 to a professional VM repair facility who can fix these types of problems so you can get onto bigger and better things. Let me know if I can help.
