Hi everyone. I've searched to forum for information on how to turn on the caller id on our Merlin Mail/Legend system, but am either confused, or can't find the information I need.

I'm pretty techno-literate -- but not when it comes to this phone.

Can anyone write or point me to a good step by step on doing this?

Thanks

Caller ID is automatic as long as its a loop start ID line card, the line rings at least twice and the provider is passing Caller ID. There are some channelbank devices made by Adtran that are not compatible with Avaya product that only pass Caller ID 40% to 60% of the time.

The cards have to support caller id, they must be loop start trunks, and the call must ring twice before answered, as the caller id is passed between the first and second rings. If the inbound calls are arriving on a PRI digital trunk, they can also show caller id.

Oh yes, the MOST important thing: You have to pay Telco to get the service, it's not automatic.

Thanks for all the fast responses.

Unfortunatly, I have no clue about the loop start id line card, channelback devices, loop start trunks, etc.

My boss told me our system was capable -- but it's not displaying on any of the lines.

Where should I start to find this information?

Go look at the phone system and report back on what the labels of the modules say. Go from left to right - the labels are at the top of each module. An alternative is to do an "inventory" from system programming under maintenance or from WinSPM. Report back on what you found. You can skip the first module on the left (procesor).

There is a setting under the Lines and Trunks menu, for LS-ID Delay. Turn it on for all the lines that are receiving caller ID. This will cause the system NOT to present the calls to the phones until either CID is captured OR 2 rings occur.

Thanks guys. I.will check things out tomorrow and report back!

Does your company SUSCRIBE to the caller id service offered by your phone company?

You DO NOT have a module capable of caller ID in your system - even if you bought the service from the phone company. If your boss wants caller ID, you need to do two things:
#1. Buy the service from the phone company for each line you want Caller ID on.
#2 Replace the 408 GS/LS MLX modules with the higher-priced "408 GS/LS-ID MLX module that has Caller ID capability.

Ok, another question.

Can we add one caller id module and leave the others as non-caller id?

Or do we have to upgrade them all at once?

Thanks for all your great responses!

Katherine

A 4 line module gets callerID on those 4 lines, an 8 line gets it on 8.

There are two types of Caller ID modules: an 800 GS/LS ID module - which would just give you 8 lines with caller ID capability - OR - a 408 GS/LS-ID MLX module - which you could use as a substitute for your regular 408 GS/LS MLX modules. You only need to swap out as many modules as you need caller-ID capable lines . Each of the 408 ID cards would give yopu 4 lines with caller ID capability. Of course, you still have to order and pay extra for the phone company to transmit caller id info per line.
