Hello,

Does anyone know if a BTMI can be used on a Merlin Legend system?

Fairly certain it only works with Merlin II, 410, 820, etc. Not Merlin Legend.

Unsupported Telephones, Adjuncts,and Adapter

Do not connect the following analog telephone adjuncts and adapters to
the system. Doing so may cause damage to the device or the system.

■ Basic Telephone and Modem Interface (BTMI)
■ Basic Telephone and Modem Interface 2 (BTMI-2)
■ ATR Interface (ATRI)
■ MTR Interface (MTRI)
■ Off-Premises Extension Unit (OPX)
■ System 25 Direct Extension Selector (DXS)

Thank you gentlemen.

The customer is a freight line with a truck shop about 300 feet from the main terminal. The phone in the truck shop is dead. We're finding only two good wire pairs left in the feeder and would like to connect a 2500 set in place of the present multi-button phone. There are no basic telephone ports in the Legend.

Can a General Purpose Adapter be used? And is it a practical alternative to a BTMI?

Do they have MLX modules/phones? If so, they can work on 2-pair of wire. BIS and older Merlin sets need all 4-pair.

No sir, there aren't any MLX modules or phones.

Can a General Purpose Adapter be used to run a 2500 set?

you can try the gpa but it may not have the volt to push it that distance, as long as it is a BIS set, no HFAI sets
you can also if it is a Bis on a legend you can wire a 48V transformer at the phone jack on the white green pair , using your blue & orange pair to use in the 2 good feed pairs to the phone

Thank you gentlemen for your kind advice.

I think we're going to try the GPA.

Will post back with results upon completion.

The BTMI works fine on the Legend system. it emulates a older Analog BIS/membrane phone.

I would personally recommend a 012 board with Ring Generator or ideally a 008OPT board as it is outside of the main building. The BTMI is not ideal for this application at all. the Off Premises Telephone Board with Ring Generator was designed for this exact application.

I also would consider replacing the phone cable as well but we all know that takes work and can cost more than the project is worth. Are they overhead phone cables or buried cables?
