I am trying to setup remote access on a Merlin Legend 3.0 system. I have very limited understanding of how these systems work, but from the users manual I am gathering that I need to assign a number that people will dial to access the system remotely. According to the manual this is setup through a trunk line. Because of my limited understanding, I don't know exactly what I need to enter. As far as I can tell from the users guide, LinesTrunks-> RemoteAccss->LinesTrunks gets me to the screen where I assign remote access. When I follow this path, I get a prompt to "enter line/trunk port." Does anyone know what I would enter here? Am I even in the right place to setup remote access? Thanks for your time and any help that you can give me.

Erich

YOUR QUESTION:

" I get a prompt to "enter line/trunk port." Does anyone know what I would enter here?"

MY ANSWER:

At that point, you enter the NUMBER of the LINE you wish to use for REMOTE ACCESS (801, 802, etc.).

Then you will be asked if you want it DEDICATED, or SHARED.

Dedicated means when you call that line, any time, you get the REMOTE ACCESS DIALTONE.

Shared means when night service is on..

Ok, that makes sense. Are the lines 801, 802, etc., usually reserved for remote access?

So Shared means you can only remotely access at night, correct?

No lines are reserved. You must pick one and then program it to be used for that feature.

Do you have a line that is not in the HUNT GROUP?

There could be another way as well.

Also, are you just wanting to access voice mail or what?

I am actually so amateur at this that I am not sure what you mean by "The Hunt Group." Please do not give up on me though! Yes, the reason I am doing this is to access the voice mail remotely. Do you have any suggestions on how, or maybe do you know of any documents that I could read that would help me. The Merlin Legend user's guide is very technical, and not much of a help.

Thanks so much for your help!

IF you have your voice mail set to answer with an AUTO ATTENDANT, then you really do not need remote access on a trunk.

What type of voice mail do you have?

The physical unit says "007 MLM." Does this shed any light?

Yep,

Do you have Auto Attendant answering?

IF so, just dial *7 when it answers, and you can log in and get your messages.

If not, re-post, and we can give other solutions.

Sweet! It worked! Thanks so much! This is very helpful and for some reason very difficult to find online. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I don't know a lot of the terms that Merlin uses for their features. At any rate, thanks a lot, this was a great help.

One more thing, do you know if it is possible to configure the phone's with the voice mail so that the message light will blink when there is a voice mail, rather than a text message?

I'm afraid I do not understand the question.

When a Voice Mail is received, the MESSAGE LIGHT lights up.

I do not know what you mean by text message....

Well, there is an option on my phone to send messages to the phone's interfaces. It would be a text message of some sort. For some reason, it does not blink when we have voice messages, but I tested sending a message (what I would call a text message, because it simply shows up in the path MENU->MESSAGES, you can view them in the graphical interface of the MLX-20L phones) and the blinking light started. I don't know how to tie the message light to the voice mail.

The voice mail AUTOMATICALLY turns on the MESSAGE LIGHT when a message is delivered to the phone that matches the mailbox.

IF it is not working, then you may be receiving a message by some other means, or your message light is broken.

Are you saying that you have no message waiting lights working in this system at all?

They do not notify when we have voice messages. But, like I said, I used the text messaging feature (Maybe also known as a posted message?) and the light worked. Could be just a crazy glitch.

I think you may have set up issues with the voice mail calling group.

Do you do the programming on this system?

It could be the voice mail is not set to be the INTEGRATED VMI type.

Well to be honest, I am helping a small Non-profit with some networking stuff, but my focus is more on the pc side of things. They wanted me to try to figure some stuff out for their phone system, which I have never worked with. I can do the programming, I believe, because I have learned the basics of how to work the menu, etc. How do you setup the voice mail to be the Integrated VMI type?

Since it's a non-profit, get me involved directly with the Legend Programming, and I will see what I can find.

I'm not sure what you mean. Is it easy to program this? I'm sure I can do it...Do you know the menu path off-hand, or no?

If not, that's cool. I appreciate your help a lot.

To make sure the group is set to VMI:

Menu > System Prog > Exit/Start > Extensions > More > Group Calling > Group Type

I followed this path, but now it wants the group extension number. I know I'm getting annoying...can you tell me how I would figure out the group extension number?
