Merlin 016 T/R random no dialtone issue

I've got a customer with a Merlin system, two Legend cabinets with a CKE5 Magix R4 V7.1 proc in this configuration:

Primary Cabinet
A3 Power Supply
CKE5
008 MLX
008 MLX
008 MLX
008 MLX
100 DCD (configured as a full PRI)

Secondary Cabinet
A3 Power Supply
008 MLX
008 MLX
408 MLX
016 TRR
Merlin Messaging R1.1 w/6 port card

The issue they are having is that the analog sets on the 016 cards (appears to be happening with both but more so on the last one) often have no dialtone. You pick up the set, and it's dead air. You hang it up and pick it back up and you've got a tone. Hit 9, dial your number and the call goes through fine and does not end until you hang up. But pick it up again and you may or may not have dialtone. I initially suspected a bad TTR but I tested all 10 and got back 2-3 beeps, and additionally my understanding is if you are out of TTRs or have a bad one the call would just get redirected to the operator, not get no tone of any kind. I do get one that doesn't seem to want to accept my DTMF tones but can't be sure as I'm doing it through remote access and am not always reliably able to even get the gateway to accept my DTMF passcode, so maybe it's a processor issue? I've tried a new 016 and different handsets and the issue persists.

Any advice? I've pasted the Last 99 error log for anyone wanting to take a look. Most of the errors are from 2/4 which is the day I replaced the 016 to no avail but maybe someone can glean something out of it?

----------------------------------- ANNOTATION -----------------------------------

Looking at your error log, I see an issue of some kind with the Voice Mail (Slot 10) on Feb 12, and I see ALL TTRs UNAVAILABLE on Feb 8.

Thus, there may be a TTR issue, and of course, the best test is done on site, more than once.

I would probably power down and re-seat the Mail & the 016 just to start.

Somehow I knew you'd be the one to answer this merlinman!

I did as you suggested and the issue was persistent; what I found while trying to test the TTRs was that almost every analog phone would not recognize the DTMF tones, just gave dialtone if you were lucky, otherwise you picked up and got dead air.

The errors did not repeat but I ripped out both 016 TRR cards and put in new ones and now they work fine so it must have been a bad card. Weird issue.

I brought the old cards back to the shop and plan on testing them, pretty sure I know which card has the bad TTR but unless I'm wrong, there's no way to repair or replace the TTR inside the card right? I just have to toss it and move on?

As far as I know, except for Voice Mails, no one is doing board level repairs on these.

There are just too many out there to justify spending the time and effort on such an undertaking.

Voice Mails however, shouldn't be tossed for sure. There are folks who can replace the HD's and usually bring them back to life.

Metroline repairs or replaces Merlin modules, and I believe they repair at the component/board level: metrolinedirect.com click or call them @ 800-929-8061.

....JIM....

Even with a bad TTR you would still get dial tone, but the system will not recognize the Touch tones you would dial.

You would never "break" the dial tone, you would just hear it till it times out.
