We have a 4 node Meridian Mail 12 modular options voicemail system operating with a Nortel Option 61C. Sometime ago we begin to have a problem with Node 3. we would get complaints that some users were unable to access their voicemail boxes. Upon investigation we would find that the hard drive on Node 3 would be shot. We would replace the hard drive and restore the user data. The system would operate ok for around 30 days. Once again we would get complaints that some users were unable to access their voicemail boxes. Again we would find that the hard drive was defective on Node 3. We have replaced this hard drive at least 4 times within the last 4 months. I might mention that this is a DC operated system. The weekend that this problem began we lost a computer and a radio system in the same room where the voicemail system is located. Both of them were destroyed as if from a power surge. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be happening to these hard drives?

is there any sort of power protection? ie Surge protector or power conditioner?

if not I would check the grounding at the very least. Never heard a HD fail that often in anything.

Everything in the room that is AC operated is running behind a UPS. The PBX is DC operated.

Just a couple of thoughts .....
Make sure there are no burned or charred connections in the node, do the same thing for the wiring and cards, also check to make sure you hard drive is not running continuously and burning up the motor.

4 nodes on a 61.. strange.. (how many users?)

i would replace the power supply for that cab.. i would almost bet if you measure the +5 vdc, it's closer to 7+.. as far as the other hard drives, don't sound related..

if one ps is pushing 7 volts. and they all spike 2 volts, guess which one fries.. and 7+ will run one so hot it will fry, almost on schedule.

i've worked with a Walt from Charlotte, nc..
