Hello All,

How can I get our disk usage down to a manageable level? We currently have these class of service settings shown below.

Type---------Name---------Minutes Allowed--------Retention Days
01..........Vacant..............3................................1 day
02..........Field.................20..............................6 days
03..........Tech/Admin.......20..............................6 days
04..........Managers..........30...............................13 days
05..........Sys Admin.........30..............................13 days
06..........Standard............15.............................5 days

I had one user who was using a total of 117 minutes in class of service type 02. How can this be? I dont fully understand how class of service works. I thought this would limit the number of minutes a mailbox could store. If you need more info please let me know. I appreciate any help with this.

Thanks :)

Mer Mail will not stop a callers from being able to leave messages even if the mailbox is full. It will stop the mailbox user from being able to do things like compose or forward massages. What you need to do is go through and clear out your dead mailboxes. Also check to see what you retention is for messsages that weren't listen to.

poncho71...sounds to me your users are abusing the mail system with saved messages look to see how long your mailboxes can keep messages before thay are deleted.then tell
your user to manage their mailboxes better or you will do it for them by having the system delete the messages seeing
how they are not.normal 30 before deletion.if they need your
help say 15 days before deletion,if that don't work try 10 days then 5 days you can only hope they get the message to manage their mailboxes properly.

In our Class of Service settings here is an example. We have
-- Receive message if mailbox is full = yes
-- Unread message retention = 0
-- Unread broadcast retention = 0

What would you recommend these setting be?

Thanks :)

poncho71...what you are looking for is maximum read
message retention (days)field determines how long
read messages are stored before being deleted.
if it is set to 0 they are retained until deleted by user.
if set to 1 or higher deleted every x days as specified in this field.you will find this in VOICE MESSAGING OPTIONS.

It varies on the class of service. Those settings are in my original post they are set to varying days.

Thanks :)

poncho71...how many user do you have on this system.and how
busy is the site are the things to keep in mind .90% full
is alot.

I'm going to throw this in, may have nothing to do with it. I was in Richardson in '96, Tech had a brand new system @ 90 +%, and it was new install. ETAS, or else couldn't square it up. Seen him 3 months later down there, problem was no one ever logged out of the Mermail Maint Terminal. Did that, went down to 15% the next day.

bigindian65... How do I know if this is possibly my problem, in other words, how do I determine if users are never logging off of Meridian Mail Maint?

I appreciate your help with this :)

That would be really unique if that was it. The maint. terminal, I'm talking about your TTY Terminal in the switchroom, not any kind of user interface, the Tech TTY on-site. Not sure if you are the only Administrator or what. If you always log out, and you're the only one with access, not going to be the scenario.

How many users on the MM ? It may be time for added storage ( usually a keycode/harddrive upgrade ). What verison is the MM on ?

MikeRizz ... MM version 12 I think. We have about 450 users using part number NT6D48BA as our hard disk. Is there anyway I can purge alarms. Were getting a whole bunch of these. I assume this is taking up space. Tweaking the alarms would be a better resolution as well. I appreciate your help.

Thanks

poncho71..Rls 12 is way out of date Rls 13 was the last
release for mermail.thats too bad because it works great last long time.now mermail is at end of life and callpilot
is what they are going to .so if you can find and upgrade
that would be great but i don't know how you could get one at this time.

Look for users who haven't logged in in a long time (i.e., people who have left but they still have a mailbox). That was my problem here. My predecessor had fits one day when system hit 98%, telling users on the PA system to delete their voicemail. I started poking into the system (my second week here) and started deleting mailboxes that hadn't been used in hundreds or thousands of days. Have rarely been above 60% ever since.

Log into Meridian Mail, choose System Status and Maintenance, then System Event and Error Reports, then SEER Retrieval, put 91 in for SEER Class, and choose a start date 10 days prior. Run through all the pages and it will show you mailboxes with no activity for the previous 30 days. I do this a couple times a year to clean things up.
