I've created a table where a date field is set up as short date and an input mask is entered. I then created a query where I changed the date format to long date (it suited my purpose better). I ran the query and everything is as it should be. However, when I merge this long date into a word document, the short date appears. I really prefer the long date. Is this something that can be fixed?

A date is stored as a real number, where the left side of the decimal point refers to the number of days since some date and the decimals to the right indicate the number of seconds. Or something like that. My main point is that you are not actually storing the date as either short or long. You're just displaying it as short or long. Therefore, I suspect you're not formatting the field like you want it.

I found the answer: after inserting merged fields; Alt F9 to show the merged fields; in the merged fields, a person needs to use switches. A person could search for help on more information. My example was {MERGEFIELD DATE \@ "dddd, MMMM d, yyyy"}

will display Wednesday, July 6, 2002
