Merge Excel into word document

I have recently had a hard disk failure but had backed up files on external disk

I have reinstated files on new hard disk.

I have many word documents which mail merge with excel spreadsheets and I have had to open the excel spreadsheet afresh. this is Ok with all except one.

For some reason I get the error message "Word cannot re-establish a DDE Connection to Microsoft Excel to complete the current task.

I have saved the spreadsheet under a different name. I have copied and pasted (values) into a new spreadsheet and named it test but still get the same error.

However, if I paste the data into a separate worksheet in another spreadsheet there is no problem.

Any suggestions?

I want to use the original spreadsheet as there are references to other worksheets in the spreadsheet.
