Always do a full and a partial backup in mermail, if your mail goes down and will not boot, the problem is often a corrupt os. if all you have is a full back up, you can't do a new install then restore users off of a full backup. the full formats the hd then loads the os form the backup tape. if you backed up a bad os, the next question from nortel will be how fast can you type. users, vm service menu services. etc...that lesson cost me 93 hours in front of a screen without a break. (coffee and smokes don't count as breaks on double time)

OUCH!

For our Card option mail I have taken down the system, removed the hard disk, produced an image of the drive, and then cloned the image to another drive (as long as the other drive is at least as big as the original drive). I also have the drive image stored for re-imaging if necessary. If I have a drive or OS failure I only need to pop in the new drive and restore the latest user backup.

great move, i can't take mine down because it front ends 40 depts at a hospital. we are going to pilot in a few months so i can do network backup to a file server, plus with raid have a shadow drive, my biggest concern is "am i going to get my saved messages back?" which will not be restored if i have to down the mail to make a clone every night
