I am running Netware 6.5 sp4 and am getting ready to upgrade to sp6. I ave a question about my memory statistics. I currently hae 3gig of memory installed. My Cache Buffer memory is at 42% (1,458,221,056 bytes)and my backup software wants it much higher. Also I have a Miscellaneous memory of 43% (1,498,848,781), which changes as my Allocated memory pool changes. What is this Miscellaneous memory and why does it want half of my installed memory?

Other than what is need for netware and the server I am loading APC's Powerchute, Named.nlm, DHCPSRVR.nlm, Dell's array manager and my Tape Backup software and my anti-virus software. I have unloaded the tape and anti-virus software to see if that made any difference but I have not seen any.

From day to day the memory number do not to be changes much, just using more than I think they should and what ever Miscellaneous memory is.

Understanding the memory allocations are very difficult to do. Generally speaking, NetWare allocates memory for whatever modules are running, then much of the rest is used for caching the file system. (Depending, however, on how NSS is configured).

More important thing, and practical, is to download and install the SEG Utility and run it. I believe it's SEG172.NLM, Google it. You run it and it monitors the memory allocation and allows you to see trends in memory consumption. If there is a problem such as a leak, its pretty easy to spot.

There's also a TID about "Memory Fragmentation" that you should look up and configure 'most' of the options, such as hard-setting the amount of RAM that DS uses.

There's also a utility that I believe Massimo (Novell Forum Sysop) wrote that analyzes the output from SEG and makes changes based on the findings. I've found it useful in certain problem servers. I can't remember what it's called off hand, but if you look up "massimo memory utility" you should find it.

I found it. It is called memcalc. And there is an NLM and an standalone exe.
