Anyone know anything about 'memory leaking' in Windows Me and the best way to go about curing it?

A lot of what's in the FAQ will apply to ME as well as Win95/98. Some items may be a little different, such as Start -> Search instead of Start -> Find. Give it a shot:

I'm not sure about your link, cdogg... seems broken.

Make sure your system is set to have Windows manage virtual memory. That way, WinMe will dynamically resize the swap file (virtual memory using hard disk) as necessary. It's not the most efficient way to use memory, but it should ensure adequate RAM most of the time. Go to:
Control Panel> System> Performance> Virtual Memory and let Windows handle it.

I tried setting my own as a tweak, but 1024MB was insufficient and gave me "out of memory" errors. I increased it to 2048MB (2 Gigs), and now mine runs fine and I don't have as much HD access... (also with the 512MB RAM I have on my machine, so RAM and HD size are fairly important)

Make sure other memory-hogging programs aren't grabbing all of your memory at start-up (even without you starting them). These can include Spyware, Download Managers, Media Players and anything you see an icon for in the System Tray. If you always have a whole buch of icons there, you can bet each one is sucking just a bit of memory (plus there are many more likely in the background without icons).

Do a Google search on "cleaning Windows startup programs" or look up some tips on MSconfig. Post back what you find, and if your situation has improved, we have tons of tips for you!

Alcom,
Nothing wrong with the link. It's in Javascript provided by the site. If you have problems linking to it, then perhaps a firewall or setting in your browser is preventing it from executing.

Alternatively, you could enter the Win95/98 forum and click on the FAQs tab. The title of the FAQ is Basics - How to Clean Up Win95/98. ~cdogg

Your link worked for me today, cdogg! I was trying to open in a new window automatically by holding down Shift when I clicked on it. It doesn't like that!

Notice I didn't outright accuse you of posting the wrong link, only that it seemed that way to me at the time! Anyway, that's how I cover my a$$... I've never seen a hyperlink that didn't allow Open in New Window before...
