Hi All,
What are IPC Semaphores and why are they declared?
How do they improve system performance?
Thanks for any help.

vi /etc/system,
change shmmax, shmseg and other paarameters in
the file,

reboot -r the Solaris box

Well thanks, but how do I calculate the figures that r to be updated.I have a sun box with solaris 8 installed on it.I have to install oracle on it.Any idea.....????

These are the shared memory and semaphore values for a Oracle Installation

Use "set"

Shmmax 4294967295
Shmmin1
Shmmni100
Shmseg10
Semmns2000
Semmsl1000
Semmni100
Semopm100
Semvmx32767

I have tried to install oracle 8.1.7 on solaris 8 but no luck.Tell if it works for you.
