Hi

I keep geting the below error message evrytime I start my PC up.

The instruction at "0x77f91b79 referenced memory at "0x00000000.The memory could not be "read"

Click OK to terminate the program
Click cancel to debug the program

My PC is a Atholon 800 with 256 RAM and Win 2000 operating system. Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem without having to rebuild my PC. Any help would be much appreciated, please try to be basic as possible as I am not that hardware literate

Many thanks in advance

Indy

with an error like that, it is probably best to trust the error code, & assume RAM is indeed at fault. i notice you have an athlon 800, in which case check the FSB speed it is running. If you have PC100 ram in it, & it is running a 133FSB i believe you will have nothing but trouble. So firstly check the RAM you have is compatible with your hardware configuration. If it is, try replacing the RAM & seeing if that solves the problem. I believe it will.

As for you not being hardward literate, this is not really an issue, because RAM is very simple to replace...... James Goodman

You didn't state how many chips you have in your system. If you have one 256Meg chip, well. But if you have two 128Meg you can remove the one in bank two and see what happens, then switch the chip, etc. The speed is, though, crucial.

Good advice above. Bus speed is the first thing to check. Reseat the memory. Try alternate slots. Swap sticks. You may have bad memory though.
If you're interested... you can run a memory diagnostic by downloading this utilility ==> It creates a bootable diskette and automatically runs the diagnostic. It might tell you more.
I used this utility to see if I was getting memory errors when overclocking.
