Hi.

I'm having 2 problems with my NT workstation (4.0 SP5). I'm hoping someone might have some ideas because the tech support at Dell has no clue.

1. Memory Dump: On occasion, usually once a day, when my modem dials out, I get a Physical Memory Dump and the "Blue Screen". It has been happening for a long time now. Once, the machine would not boot back up. It said "Operating System Not Found." So I did the Emergency Repair disk but then it did not recognize my Administrator username and/or password. I had to rebuild my c: drive. Yuck! But the problem is still there. I do not know if it is related to the modem driver or some other application that I'm running. Does anyone have any suggestions?

2. Print File Not Found: Just recently, starting 2 days ago, I discovered I can no longer print from my NT machine. I tried printing a Fax cover sheet from Word 2000 and it comes up with:

Printers Folder
Error writing to LPT1: for Document Microsoft Word - fax.doc: The system cannot find the file specified.
Do you wish to retry or cancel the job?

I tried printing from a different application (Excel) and it did the same thing. So then I tried printing a test page from the printer driver. Same thing. I removed the printer and reinstalled it but still the same thing. The cables all look ok meaning plugged in good. I hope someone can suggest something because I could really use my printer again.

Thanks.

I would update your SP5 to 6a.

I would also take your Virtual Memory up. Should be set to Ram plus 11 on a Workstation. If it carries on give it more memory.

Used to have this problem as well, with NT not the Dells. Once I took the memory up it stopped.

GOOD LUCK.

MatthewA:

I have my Virtual Memory set at 200 Mb and my ram is 128 Mb. Do I need to increase it more? When the memory dump happens, sometimes only Dial-Up Networking is running. Other times, it happens when Outlook 2000 dials out to check for mail.

Thanks.

In that case cut Virtual Mem down. Set it to 139MB. Ensure it is on a drive that has plenty of space left and is preferably not fault tolerant.

Definitely upgrade to SP6a.

Thanks for advise! I loaded SP6a and reset my Virtual Memory at 139 MB. I have not had a memory dump since then. I hope this corrected the problem.

Also, for my print problem, I heard that I should remove and reconfigure my LPT port. I removed the LPT port and then had fun trying to reconfigure it. You have to go into the BOIS and disable plug-n-play in order to do this. But now I can print. Yeah!

Thanks!

I just had another memory dump. I ran the Dumpexam.exe and here's the results:

The files NAVENG.Sys and NavEx15.Sys are part of my Norton AntiVirus software. It came with my computer.

This happens only when the modem dials out. It gets the dial tone and then the memory dump. And it does not happen every time. Any ideas because I'm clueless?

Thanks.
Patty
