I have a SharePoint 2003 Server witht he current SPs loaded. I have an Exchange Server 2003 (all the current SPs loaded) but when I setup a new member to one of my SharePoint portals I get the following error:

"The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator.

Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services."

Now I have verified that my exchange server is setup correctly:

Outbound SMTP server:
myserver.texas.domain.com

From e-mail address:
it@mydomain.com

Reply-to e-mail address:
it@mydomain.com

Character Set

1252 (Western European (Windows))

But for the life of me I cannot figure out the problem... can anyone suggest a possible solution?

Couple of things to try to help troubleshoot

Make sure you can ping the SMTP server from the SharePoint server. If not, then it is a DNS issue and you should use IP address instead of servername. You may want to do this anyway, just to completely eliminate DNS and lookups from the equation

Does your Exchange server require authentication for sending email out? If so, SharePoint probably has issues with this.

I will change to the IP, that is a great point. On the Sending out, yes I do require authentication, and as you pointed out (issues with that) I cannot find anywhere to process the authentication. MS - suggests that you have outbound authentication, but there one product that is a great tool for Exchange, Sharepoint has no authentication method... yeah!

I had this problem as well and gave up trying because I as well have authentication turned on. Do you just turn it off or how do you go about working around that? Turning it off just opens up the server for SPAM does it not?
