On a Toshiba Satellite Pro 445CDT

I had successfully upgraded fromWin 95 to 98. Added Norton systems
for virus protection,etc.
Next attempted memory upgrade from 64mb to 144mb. On boot, I get
windows protection error while initializing device PERF. I'm unable to find
any info on whatever this device is. I've looked in the Windows 98
Resource Kit book to no avail.
I did a restart in safe mode. Get fatal exception 0E at 0028:00000385.
I already had company send me 2nd memory upgrade module. Same
problem.
During boot, Toshiba is validating existance of new memory. Haven't
figured out how to get to bios yet on this laptop, but mem has been
scanned & proper amount detected (so they say).
Any ideas out there? I will be turning off Norton stuff & try again after I
had read some posts about somewhat similar problem which seemed to
be heat related to non laptop hardware.
Thanks for any help you might give.

Perf is a 98 device driver. That's all i can tell you about it. You got the error after installing the new ram? Remove the new ram and see if you have the same problem using just the old ram. If you don't the new ram is bad. Windows protection errors are often caused by bad ram.

Kento, Thanks for your reply. I had to put back original
memory in order to have the laptop work. The new memory was
tested by Toshiba during boot with no problem. The
memory comes as a complete module of 128M & does not add
on to the original 48M. So, I have to do a complete swap.
Safe mode produced the fatal excp 0E.
Do you have any ideas where else I might look or go for
help?

Found it!!

PEFF.VXD is part of the System Monitor. Sure enough after looking I found it in its correct Registry place also:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CuurentControlSet/Services/VxD

Try installing the System Monitor in Add - Remove Program / Windows Setup / System Tools.

If that doesn't work, after uninstalling it you may be able to remove the Reg entry from above. Just make sure you export the key before you delete it in case you have to restore it. Your mileage may vary...
