Laptop had ver9 and would not play .avi file. Web help said it should. Upgraded to ver11 and still will not. What do I need to do. My desktop does just fine.

Hi,
Check the codecs needed to play that file - the laptop may not have the same ones as the desktop.

This tool can tell you which ones are needed:

I went to that website and loaded it and another from one of its links. Still no go. I thought I remember getting what I needed from a MS website.

Don't troubleshoot codec issues or Windows Media Player issue. Download this:

VideoLAN - VLC media player

It plays just about anything you can throw at it. Free.

What error message are you receiving when you try to play the file?

Vista Codec Package v5.4.3 Final (and XP)

Basically, the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack will play every video file on this planet.

If you right-click on the .avi file and select Properties, is there any "Unblock" check box at the bottom of that page?
