when trying to play an audio cd, get a media player error
"an internal error has occured". Uninstalled and reinstalled realplayer and mediaplayer. It's on a Dell laptop, and used to work fine
can you get me the service tag or the model of your laptop along with which OS and which version of media player you have?
Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them the usual way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of complaining.

clear your startup environment using msconfig. uncheck everything in the stratup tab. then uninstall both mdeia player and realplayer. install only media player and see if the problem re occurs.

you'll have to uninstall wmp manually. its tricky and there are a couple of ways. sometime one works sometime the other try them both and see...
try this one from 'run' in the start menu (remove the ''): 'RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\wmp.inf,Uninstall' you should get a nice prompt 'Do you really want to uninstall windows XP wmp9?', the HDD makes a fuss, you'll be asked to reboot, and it should be gone.
otherwise try this:
wmp.inf - located in \windows\inf =2 key items= First - [WMPUninstKey] is there but has not script actions. Second - Bottom part of the .inf you will find this PROMPT_UNINSTALL_COMPLETE = "Microsoft Windows Media Player uninstall is now complete." CONFIRM_UNINSTALL="Are you sure you wish to uninstall the Microsoft Windows Media Player?" TITLE_UNINSTALL="Microsoft Windows Media Player Uninstall" Plus in the registry you will find this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer] "BlockUninstall"="Yes"
change the registry keys and try. quite tricky.
also you can try this:
win xp has a directory under system32 called dllcache where resides ... tada wmplayer.exe ! When you delete it and run wmplayer from StartMenu>Run the system indicates that some files have been removed and must be reinstalled. Just say no and you're done ! Now when you try to run wmplayer it says : 'windows can't find wmplayer.exe' ...
anywayz, once you are sure that you have actually and completely purged your system of wmp, download a fresh copy from the web and reinstall. that should fix your problem.
you are kepping on getting that error coz there is a problem with wmp and since ms dosent allow complete removal of wmp

I am having the same problem as Goss on a new Toshiba laptop. Nearly every time Media Player tries to play a file (no matter the extension) it crashes the OS. I have gone through the manual uninstall/reinstall, but it didn't fix my problem as it did his.
Any other suggestions? Your help will be much appreciated!
To TunaBoy57, if something thats suposed to work doesn't then I ask why, If we just accept failures then no one will fix it and no one will improve. We are inquisitive by nature and want to know why, not because we always need to know but because we would like to know.
To goss, Don't switch just cause wmp wont work for you, keep digging and let us know wassssuuupppp,
Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.
You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.
