Upon the boot sequence and prior to the Windows ME screen and right after, I have a massive list of items that are gone from my system and I want to wipe this junk out. How do I do this?

Thanks

Robert

oldcoputerguy,

The items all start with:

Invalid setting in the msdos.sys file: followed by a large number of numbers with [00145B89]loadsuccess=vmouse
loadingvxd=vkd
syscritinit=mtrr
and about a hundred or so more others with varying items.
I may have more issues that just the very partial list here, but I have tried to reinstall my OS fresh and no luck.... the junk is still there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

It sure sounds to me like that OS needs to be reinstalled. Your say you tried it once and had no luck. If you explain maybe I can help.

Run the Scan Disk before you start to be sure there are no problems with the disk.

Disable your Anti Virus and any firewall you have, put the Windows ME CD in the drive and when it comes up choose "Browse This CD" from there choose Setup and it should take off and run.

If you did that and still have the junk you will have to to a full Format and reinstall.

Sounds like some program tried to insert its drivers into msdos.sys. Msdos.sys isn't used for that purpose in windows me as far as I know.

1. run msconfig. Look in environment. It might tell you what all the junk is.

2. Msdos.sys is just a text file with some info on what to do and where to look while booting. here's kjine:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
UninstallDir=C:[Options]
Logo=0
AutoScan=0
WinVer=4.90.3000
BootMenu=1
BootMenuDelay=11
BootMulti=0
BootGUI=1

The rest of the file is just fill so the file size is > 1028 bytes.

I would change your msdos.sys to msdos.bak, copy mine and fill with x's to 1028+byts and name is msdos.sys and see what happens. If your winver is different from mine, substitute.

Mine has a command that boots the menu for 11 seconds before booting. If you don't want that justchange bootmenu = 1 to 0

Gess

Gess,

I would like to make an attempt at your suggestion, but am not really all that technical with making such changes. I did run msconfig and found a few odd things and just unchecked them. How do I change the msdos.sys? I am game for trying as I am about to save some needed information on another disk and re-format the whole drive.

Thanks,

Bob
