mcupdate.exe - application error

I hope someone can help me. I am running windows NT server 4 and have mcafee installed on it. I also have securecast. The problem is that nearly everyday i get a error that says:

MCUPDATE.EXE - Application Error
"0x77f88a87" referenced memory at "0x00000018". The memory could not be "read"

Click ok to terminated application

I would greatly apprectiate it if someone could let me what is causing the problem and how to fix it.

I get the same error running NT 4.0 SP6. In my case it is caused by Norton Antivirus live update. Fundamentally the same as your McAfee update program. I can also make it occur using F-Secure backweb - another online updating program.

It can also be produced using the Internet Connection Wizard. Microsoft claim it is a RAS initialisation problem and say that rebooting fixes it:

I have the exact same error message as you two, but from a different program.
Outlook 2000 causes:

Click on OK to terminate the application.

This happens after I do any real work within Outlook (meaning I do anything such as add a contact, or send an email).
It does not seem to happen when I simply look at a contacts info.

I get an error message with one of the same addresses when I try to run explorer

I dont know if this is related at all, but since it had the exact same address as the first error message, and the address is the same every time I try to run Explorer, I dont think it is just luck that the yare the same address.

I hope someone has an idea as to what is happening.
Is this just a problem of bad memory?

This odd item cropped up on "The Register:"

Outlook Express users who also use McAfee's antivirus software have reported suffering from mysterious cases of disappearing email.

An intermittent problem involving the interaction of Windows
2000 or XP with McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 and Outlook Express 6
means that the index file to existing email folders can become damaged when a user downloads new mail. In extreme cases folders are trashed - all users get is a message saying Welcome to Outlook Express 6 as if they were a new user.

A similar problem involving Outlook Express 5.5 means that all saved mail in a user's Inbox goes away when users download new email. The messages are still present in the .dbx file used by Outlook Express but as the index is damaged, users can't read them from the email client itself....

I also get the same message as Nath. But I have CA InoculateIT 6.0 eTrust instead of McAfee. Any help of course would be appreciated!

I get the same error in outlook 200 on my laptop. Just that I get it when I click on toold and drag my mouse over dial up networking to click on options, and as soon as Dial up Networking gets highlighted, the error pops up.

Invalid instruction at 0X77F88A87 refferenced memory at 0X00000018, the memory could not be read. I have a cellular modem, have not used it, only use the laptop over a LAN at my home.

I am getting the same error when i click on tools and then pass the mouse over top of Dial up networking, as soon as it would get highlighted, the error would appear.

Any one have any idea on what could cause this error to come up. This is the only time I see it when I am using outlook. Now I resort to the keyboard to access anything from under tools, it is my work arround for it. Would like to solve it.
