Guys I'm getting ready to start at a training center for my mcse my comoany will be paying for my training. I'm thinking about going for a mcdba. I've started doing more with databases over the past few months. How are the mcdba exams and do they really prepare you to take on the role of a sql server admin/developer.

I think you have it reversed. That should read:
"How well has my role of a sql server admin/developer prepared me to take the mcdba exams?"

The exams aren't going to prepare you at all for your role. Real life experience will.

Agreed. I would maybe start with taking some of the courses within the MCDBA 2000 stream (programming SQL, querying SQL) but I wouldn't go all the way until you have some good solid SQL Server experience under your belt.

People have different views on certification, personally I think certifications are a great way to help get a job... but if you want to KEEP the job no book or course can replace real life hands on experience.

As always... just my humble opinion :)
