I passed 70-297 the other day and I'm now an MCSE.

I don't really feel any different though :)

hey well done!

have a few beers - you'll eventually feel different. You'll be able to sing, dance, and look much more attractive to the opposite sex.

i still think netware's the future pagy :)

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

..netware? didnt that go away with IP?
...i hear netware was the major contributor to microsofts active directory. i also hear it is pretty good router/firewall/server....not sure ..never touched or seend the interface...always wanted to.....

Dan,

Theres a person on the netware forum's called marv, u should go along and make a comment like that and watch him flip, i like to wind him up as much as possible, he's so netware tunnel visioned it's scary.

Although i wouldn't knock netware, seeing as we have 200 servers to look after, rumour is, windows 2003 migration is in the pipeline..bye bye 500days uptimes!!!!

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

.....juan69,
...i was pretty careful with my wording...even gave netware credit for active directory..
...truth of the matter..i have never been able to get my hands on a netware server (software)..and never had a buddy that knew netware...

...any idea why they are canning the netware servers?

......what does microsoft offer that netware doesnt..
.........you already told me uptime....how bout cost, interoperability..administration...
....there is a big picture why they are getting rid of them..i wish i knew..

......talk at you in a bit...

Netware servers are not being canned, Netware 6.5 is the last version of 'traditional' netware and now most of the services that netware offered are being ported to Linux. I understand that Netware 6.5 will be supported until at least 2012.

Netware itself is becoming Open Enterprise Server which offers either a Linux or Netware kernel.

Netware is not responsible for AD directly, Novell Directory Services (NDS) which is now called edirectory was Novell's directory service offering that Netware used, edirectory can run on Netware, Windows, Linux and even some Unix flavours I believe. Microsoft realised that they too required a directory service for Windows 2000 as the NT4 domain model was rubbish.

Netware is easy to administor, all admin work is pretty much done in a web browser nowadays, its a rock solid OS, there are no known viruses for netware, you can make a netware server look like a PDC, it can host native file access for windows, macs and Linux.

Now I like Netware and Windows 2003 and find they both offer pretty much the same services and I certainly don't want a 'which one is better debate' :)

Why are people getting rid of them? I don't really think people are. My understanding is that most people who have Netware are either upgrading to the latest version (6.5) or moving to Linux and people who have Windows NT4 or 2000 networks are upgrading to 2003.

There is a whole lot more history to this than I can possibly type up here.

ahh yeah, I used Novell back in the 4.x days - man we had it running for an incredibly long time. we ruined the uptime clock record when we had to move the server to our new office. Then it ran for 450 odd days until we replaced the server.
