MCE 2005 - internet

Hi Everyone,

I really hope someone can help, I have upgraded to MCE2005, my computer is on a domain and access's the 'always on' internet through the domain controller.

I can watch Live TV fine, I can manually record tv and listen to the radio. The only thing that isnt working is I can not get the media center application to connect to the internet, so have no program guide. The pc itself connects fine, IE and MSN Messenger work fine, it is only the media center application that is refusing to connect.

I have found that MCE is placing the following entry in my event log...

MCE 2005 is a superset of XP Home. The previous versions were supersets of XP Pro.

You cannot join a domain with MCE 2005.

Thank you so much for your replies, you are a life saver!

MCE 2005 can not join a domain, unless you are upgrading from MCE 2004. Because MCE 2004 did have the domain functionality, if you upgrade microsoft have allowed you to join domains.

At least this is my understanding, I could be completely wrong! But my machine is currently connecting to the domain fine because IE and Messenger are both finding the internet and working ok.

You can use Domain resources, you just cannot do have the Domain join unless through the upgrade. You are absolutely correct.

In earlier versions of Media Center, a scenario where you join your computer to a domain is supported. If you upgrade to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 from an earlier version of Media Center that is joined to a domain, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 will retain the domain status and credentials. If you remove the computer from the domain to enable Fast User Switching for use with a Media Center Extender, the computer will not be able to rejoin the domain.

Note You may still be able to use Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to access domain resources that are shared on the network. You can do this if the shared resource does not require that your computer is a member of the domain.

Thankfully my machine is connecting to all the domain resources ok.

.... its just very strange that the Media Center application won't connect to the internet. And I can't find anywhere you can tweek any internet settings other than is it 'dial up' or 'always on'.

I took the rather drastic step of formatting my machine last night and reloading MCE, and unfortunatly I have the same problem... and my remote control does work now aswell

The actual MCE application still refuses to see an internet connection that iexplorer and messenger see with no problems.

Hi again bcastner,

First thanks again for taking the time to try and help me.

I am behind a proxy server, during the weekend I plugged my pc directly into the adsl router, and it connected fine!!
So I am assuming that it either doesnt like the proxy server, or uses a non-standard port that isnt open on the firewall. Do you know what ports MC uses? Or is there just a setting somewhere to let it know to use a proxy server?

Because MCE 2005 lacks the Protected Storage service, I am unclear as to how it would authenticate with a proxy server.
