Hi,

Does anyone know when it will be available? Should I pursue the MCDBA 2000 instead of waiting?

Thanks,
PNC.

It will be a while. There are no dates as of yet. It will be several months at least after the product is released.

My guess is that it will be at least 6 months to a year.

I'd get the MCDBA SQL 2000 then do the upgrade to 2005 when it's availble. The Microsoft certs are designed to show that you have been using the product for some time.

It takes time for Microsoft to write the tests and have them tested by the current MCDBAs.

I started on the MCDBA track earlier this year.

I felt it would be late 2006 before the new MCDBA exams came out so felt it would be worth the effort to do the 2000 version and then upgrade to MCDBA 2005 when it comes out.

I decided however to take the Windows 2003 Networking exam
( not yet done that one ). I figured the upgrade from MCDBA 2003 would be less than the upgrade from MCDBA 2000
.. but who knows how it will be organized.

There is no MCDBA 2003.

The version of the MCDBA that you have is based on the SQL version not the Windows version of the test that you take with it.

If you pass the MCDBA with SQL 2000 then you have MCDBA 2000, if you pass with SQL 7 then you have MCDBA 7.

So even if you pass with 70-290 for Windows Server 2003 as the networking option, it is still a MCDBA 2000?

Microsoft is developing a whole new set of certifications, starting with SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005.
The program will be launched nov 7th 2005.
You should check out the following links:

• Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine Online: • SearchWin2000.com: • CertCities.com: • CertMag.com: • Compu'Train:
Succes,

ableijs.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like I've wasted my time with MCDBA ( shrugs shoulders ). Instead of the minimum half a year gap between the release of the new SQL Server and the new exams they look to be within 45 days.

Those 45 days you should take with a grain of salt (this is a dutch saying). That the program will be launched on the 7th of november doesn't mean that it will be fully operational. Moreover, your MCDBA certification will remain valid for SQL Server 2000 and there will be upgrade-paths from MCDBA to MC IT Professional: Database Administrator.

Good luck,

ableijs.

Very true.

My initial dispair has subsided.)

I don't yet have an MCDBA, I'm half way through so it's a bit awkward for me. I think I will continue on the MCDBA path. Beats going out at weekends and spending money. LOL.

Taking 70-229 tomorrow ( gulp ).

Fingers crossed.

Here is the Microsoft site on the MCITP: Database Admin exams.
For those of us who are already MCDBA Microsoft has just sent out the invites to take the Beta exams in late November and early December. The tests are supose to be released in early 2006 (think the end of Q1).

Passed 839.
Better do 70-228 now.

Yuop I like the fact there is only one exam to pass to update MCDBA.

There are actually 2 tests to upgrade.

Before becomming MCITP: Database Administrator you have to get the MCTS: SQL Server 2005 Cert which requires passing 70-431. Then you can upgrade your MCDBA to MCITP: Database Administrator via 70-447 instead of taking 70-443 and 70-444.

Hi,
I am considering a career change (have been involved in Contact Center support, WFM, reporting and analysis etc) and would like some advice on MCDBA. I have done some reading on the Microsoft web-site and am not sure if I should pursue a MCDBA 2000 or MCDBA 7. Reading some earlier messages, I understand that MCDBA 2005 will be out soon. How marketable will an MCDBA 2000 be once the new version comes out? Also - what is the process of upgrading to a newer cert?

Thanks all
R Dean

An MCDBA isn't going to do you much good as SQL 7 is at it's end of life. Mainstream support for SQL 7 ends 12/31/05. Most shops aren't running SQL 7 any more anyway.

SQL 2000 still has a couple of years left on it. Mainstream support for SQL 2000 doesn't end until November 2007. The SQL 2005 exams should be available towards the end of Q1 of 2006 (granted that could change at any time).

The new cert isn't called MCDBA any more. Microsoft is changing the entire cert system starting with SQL 2005. Now it's a MCITP: Database Administrator certification.

As I posted above:

I am well on the way to completing my MCDBA 2000.
I aim to finish May next year.

The MCDBA will still be valid but will only cover SQL 2000.
For SQL 2005 I will need to take a further two exams which I will start to pursue next year as an upgrade to MCDBA 2000.

I certainly agree with Denny concerning SQL 7.
Do not waste your time on it. You need to decide if you
want to go straight in to SQL 2005 and the equivalent certifications to an MCDBA or start working on the MCDBA 2000 and upgrade when the new exams are all out as I am.

If you can't wait to get started, you could do one of the MCDBA exams to get a feel for wether this is the direction you want to go or just start working with SQL 2005 and wait for the exams. In my opinion, when doing a career change, the important thing is to make sure you you have chosen the right path. I think 70-228 is the easiest MCDBA exam in my humble opinion.

Thank you. In reviewing the prerequisites for the courses tied to some of the MCDBA exams (including 70-228), there are numerous references to having a Networking (Installing, administering Windows servers etc) certification to successfully participate in the MCDBA course. In your opinion, for someone with my background, which course should I complete to fulfill the prereq requirements? I do not have a networking background. I have done some basic desktop support troubleshooting and can work my way around a windows OS. That will help me plan out exactly how many courses/exams I need to complete to get ready to take the DB exams. Thank you again for your input
