The module will be available in the second half of December
at a per-node price of US$15 for a perpetual licence.
Support for the anti-spyware add-on, such as signature
updates, will be rolled into existing support enterprise
plans, without any added charges.

McAfee this week announced an add-on to its enterprise
anti-virus software that boosts spyware protection for
businesses.

Called McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Edition Module, the
add-on integrates with McAfee's VirusScan Enterprise 7.0
and 8.0i, said John Bedrick, a product marketing manager
at security vendor.

Doh!!

I just hope their spyware detection signatures are improved significantly with this new product to detect spyware/adware better than what is currently picked up by VSE 8.0i.

This really makes me angry.

Adware/Spyware protection was supposed to be included in VirusScan version 8. I did notice a difference in Version 7.0 and Version 8 but the module should have been included in Version 8. Spyware/Adware are just like virus's, worms and trojans.

Now we have to pay 3.50 - 4 per machine. Its in private beta right now and I want to get my hands on it. They were only going to let me in the private beta if I made a commitment to buy it this year. But 2004 is left and who still has a budget =).

It is nice that it is just a module update and doesnt require a full installation of a new product. I hear this is supposed to drill down in the registry and kill all the nasty stuff. Around 2600 new spyware will be detected.

So this spyware add-on module won't be included in the existing McAfee Anti Virus Defense package for free? If that is the case, I know I won't be making a recommendation to look at McAfee as my enterprise wide adware/spyware removal tool given the poor/lack of tech support available for our existing products.

It should have been included with VSE 8.0i, but I guess they want more $$$.

I agree with VictorySabre,
The price is way to high to put it ONTOP of VirusScan 8.0i.
If I should calculate this to our couple of hundreds of licenses, the price goes sky high.

I just got confirmation from a McAfee rep that it isn't included with our existing McAfee Anti-Virus Defense Suite and it will cost us $15 a node per user.

I'll wait to see what everyone elses opinions are after they have purchased and actively using it before I consider getting it.

just to tell you we have a 2500 user license, figure out the cost ONTOP of the existing AVD suite.....

yeah, we have about 12k pc's and another 500 servers... don't think we'll be running out to get this.

Doh!!

What do you guys want? a free solution, Ad-Aware costs more than this and has no option to scan for virus or do partial firewall. I wish I could get our mgmt. to buy the add-on for our 30k licenses. The real problems we all will be facing soon is going to be mal-ware related, so get ready to spend some money. I would just assume manage the solution in one place.

ePOAdmin,

I recognize that malware, such as spyware and adware, are going to be a bigger nuisance than viruses. If McAfee threw that in for free, it would be a no-brainer to implement it right away to work with our existing ePO/VirusScan products. Since it does cost extra money to purchase McAfee's Anti-Spyware solution, I'll be going through the standard evaluation of the various enterprise products out there to get a product that is the best solution for the price.

While ePO is already in place at my company, I would not hesitate to implement another centrally managed enterprise solution if it meant we would get a better product, even if it costs a little more than what McAfee charges.

Partly, I guess I wasn't too happy that VSE 8.0i came with a crippled "Potentially Unwanted Programs" scanner where it was made to look like it could handle all our malware problems.

I agree with Victory,

Why put in a adware/spyware piece into your latest VS console when they're just going to let it die on the vine.

I'll be evaluating other things too
