Hi, and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I use McAfee ver. 4.5.0 on a W2000 machine. A few days ago a message started coming up at the end of my bootup:

"WebScanX.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created."

Even if I then click on webscanx.exe the program's not working. The 'VShield' icon showing is the one without the sword. I now can't find eicar (the fake virus for testing AV systems).

Is there a way for me to just replace this file? Or is that even the right approach at this time?

Any ideas appreciated!! Ben

I just looked up eicar for someone else, so it's still in my clipboard:
Did you install anything before this started happening? Perhaps a firewall software? Or make any changes to your browser configuration? If memory serves, webscanx is the ActiveX scanning component.

Thank you, smah, for the response. I didn't write clearly - when I said 'I can't find eicar' I meant that McAfee doesn't find it on my hard drive when I run a virus scan. (I had an eicar file from before, but I saved the link you gave me - thanks!) I've made no installations, and no changes to my browser (IE 5.5). I'm just not sure how to proceed from here...

Again, Thanks, Ben

There's an upgrade available for VS 4.5.0 (it's SP1 for VS 4.5). Try installing it since one of the issues resolved includes this problem.
