Greetigns All!

I just signed up to this board so be gentle here!

Okay, my questions,

We have just rolled out about 70 pc's with mcafee
45 sp1 and are getting complaints from users that the system is much more SLOWER then before.

We switched from Inoculate to Mcafee for several reasons.

1) One client for 95/98/2000/XP instead of several ones
2) Netware 6 support
3) Guinevere integration and support

We are not sure why Mcafee causes SLOWER performance.
Mcafee was installed on different workstations and laptops
from 95 to XP.

Who can recommend settings for mcafee or specific tuning issues.

Also i have noticed that there are some hotfixed available for the multiplatform client but don't seem to find them on the site, (and YES we have a support FULL prime support contract)

So my questions would be.

1) What can be changed to the configuration to increase system performance on windows xp/2000/98 systems?

2) Who has good experience with MCafee 451 and can share some setup experiences.?

3) Who can tell me what hotfixes are available and where i can find them?

I would like to think that my choice of switching to mcafee is a good one, now someone PLEASE say that it these issues
can be fixed

Thanks much for your reply

Hans.

I would start with the hotfix. This reduces the amount of memory and processor resources used by VirusScan.
Are you managing these clients with ePO? If so you could exclude the epoagent directory from scanning in VShield.
Have a look at how many files have been scanned by VShield after the PCs have been for a couple of hours by double clicking on the shield in the system tray. If you have a very high number of files scanned find what is being scanned frequently and also exclude files/directories from scanning.
This increases the risk of an infection so think about what you are scanning and schedule regular full system scans to make sure these directories remain clean.

I have found that one problem with McAfee is that it will take 100% of the CPU when it is doing a scan. This can be remedied using a registry entry:

REMEMBER using the registry editor can be dangerous so proceed at your own risk.

Here are the instructions:

High CPU utilization with on demand scanner scan32.exe

With VirusScan 4.51 you can create a registry value that specifies the maximum average CPU capacity that the on-demand scanner can consume.

To create the registry value, follow these steps:
Start the Windows registry editor.
Locate this registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Network Associates\TVD\VirusScan
Create a new REG_DWORD variable with the name ·ODSAverageCPUUse·.
Assign a value between 10 and 90. This value represents the average percentage of CPU capacity that the on-demand scanner can consume. Values below 10 or above 90 are ignored.

IMPORTANT: When using the DWORD EDITOR to assign the numeric value, be certain to select the DECIMAL option so that the value is read as a percentage.

Close the registry editor.

I have found that this helps our installations significantly.
