Our area code just went to 1+10-digit dialing. Our mayor wants to know if we can just make the system automatically dial 9 plus 1 plus the area code.
Keep in mind we have several PBXs in the City, and we also have fax machines on POTS lines and some of our smaller offices are on POTS lines or small key systems, so they'd still have to do 1+10 anyway.
I want to suggest just programming an autodial key with 91NPA so he can push that and then the 7-digit number. Everybody else in our NPA has to dial 1+10 and so do people in 16 other states. I don't want to make our City a real oddball, even if digit manipulation is possible. But, I may get over-ruled.
Can anyone help me start making a list of pitfalls if we make ourselves unique and figure out a way to keep 7-digit dialing? Past experience has taught me that when you purposefully do something that is out of the norm, it comes back to haunt you later on.
