Our area code just went to 1+10-digit dialing. Our mayor wants to know if we can just make the system automatically dial 9 plus 1 plus the area code.

Keep in mind we have several PBXs in the City, and we also have fax machines on POTS lines and some of our smaller offices are on POTS lines or small key systems, so they'd still have to do 1+10 anyway.

I want to suggest just programming an autodial key with 91NPA so he can push that and then the 7-digit number. Everybody else in our NPA has to dial 1+10 and so do people in 16 other states. I don't want to make our City a real oddball, even if digit manipulation is possible. But, I may get over-ruled.

Can anyone help me start making a list of pitfalls if we make ourselves unique and figure out a way to keep 7-digit dialing? Past experience has taught me that when you purposefully do something that is out of the norm, it comes back to haunt you later on.

WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN WE WENT TO 10 DIGIT DIALING, SOMRE CUSTOMERS WANTED TO DIAL JUST THE 7 DIGITS JUST LIKE THEY HAD ALWAYS DONE. WE JUST ASK THEM WHO IS GOING TO DIAL THE AREA CODE WHEN YOUR AT HOME OR USING YOUR CELL PHONE.

you can always setup a dmi table to insert a 9 however i am with the other 2 replies so far, we dont need to make anyone more lazy

Yes you can....
change all you local NXX's to a new RLI
Then in ld 86 associate that RLI with a DMI
Set the DMI to insert your 1+your area code.

yes but why? you need to build it per pbx per office per site.. and the users might as well get used to dialing 10 digits now, another 6 months to a year someone in each area code will get a new nxx that forces you to take it all out. elected officials need to make promises not set policy.

yes it can be done, no i would not do it. there is not a reason to delay 10 digit dialing.. telco made that choice because they need new nxx's.. cell companies, voip etc..

JP, you're right on the money here. I'm in the Chicago suburbs...don't have to tell you how many NPAs and overlays we have!!! @#$%^@&$

My understanding is that this request would have to be programmed in NARS/BARS and that it would have to be done BY NXX BY NPA. Let me see, several thousand NXX per NPA times nearly a dozen NPAs, and the programming would have to be updated every time there's a change in NPA or NXX.

KISS really applies here. I hope I can convince the Mayor.

Thanks, all, for your input.

who dresses your mayor? some people get a title and then become lazy!

It can be done but man your creating a real headache for somebody.

And think about the time you'll waste trying to trouble shoot this setup everytime somebody complains that they can't dial a paticular number.

If they are serious I would suggest a second tech just to manage this thing.

That was one of my biggest fears....the future troubleshooting. Not to mention keeping up with a new NXX every time a new one is activated in our new overlay NPA...multiplied by the number of switches we have.
