Using 98SE. I Have a 40GB Maxtor D740x-6L as slave and a 1.5 Gb as master. 40GB worked fine until I fdisked (FAT32)and formatted the 1.5 again. Now the 40 does not show up in Windows but still shows up in BIOS. Jumpers and cables are fine and I suspect it is not a problem with the motherboard because I tried putting in a 2GB PRIOR to this as a new master and same thing happened. The 40GB would not show up in windows. Then when I put the 1.5 back in it showed up in Windows. Its only now that I formatted the 1.5 that theres a problem. Dont want to use Maxblast because I dont want to lose information on the drive because of fdisk and formatting. NEED HELP BADLY! ANYONE!

Just curious...

If you right-click My Computer on your desktop, click properties and go to the Performance tab, does it say any drives are using MS-DOS Compatibility Mode?

No it doesn't say that. It says "Your system is configured for optimum performance."

Boyer11 - - -how you getting on with this mate. It is almost exactly the problem i am having - since fdisking and reinstalling w98se over the weekend, I am unable to locate my 40gb Hitachi slave drive. It shows up in BIOS, and is accessible in fdisk.

boyer11,

Was the partition on the 40GB drive an extended one or primary? If extended, I suspect that repartitioning the primary on the small disk has caused the extended to go missing. You should be able to retrieve the data using a data recovery app (free one here should work on fat32 - - but you'll need somewhere to recover it to.
