Hi,

We have tried this on a few server all with 1gb of RAM and all the server start to fail.

We have a folder with 132,000 35k-40k files in it. If you try to do anything with this folder the machine will hang for ages. If you try and close the window it will leave it on screen, partly drawn.

A delete of the folder will take forever. A right click, the same. It seems explorer doesn't like this many files in a folder. If you actualy manage to open the folder the machines will hang. If the folder is a share that is the end of the machine :)

These files are emails ready to be sent out as a bulk mailing. When the email program starts using this folder the machine will slowly grind to a halt.

Does anyone know how many files Windows 2000 server will except?

Their is no anti virus software on this machine.

Any help will be most welcome.

Best wishes

Michael

It hangs because explorer is atempting to enumerate all the files. If you let it ride long enough it might be okay.

You could use the command line to move files to another location and work with 30,000 of the files at a time.

I don't know what the max is, i know there is a recommended limit - but we exceed that all the time.

Try adding 3 more GB of ram.

Located the following info on file systems/Max file size and max. # of files per folder:

File System Max File size Max # of files in folder
FAT 16 4 GB 512
FAT 32 4 GB 65,534
NTFS (all versions) no limit 4.2 billion

My files are on NTFS and it doesn't like over 100,000 much. Sure it will come back life in the end.

Is their a way of stopping it enumerating the files. As they are emails they won't be staying around long anyway.

Best wishes

Michael
