Hi

I'm trying to use a 1.2 TB disk on a Red Hat Linux 7.3 system, but I see the following when I boot:

Kernel: sdb: Spinning up disk ... <3> Out of memory: Killed process 15 (insmod)

I've searched the Red Hat Linux 7.3 documentation, and can't find mention of a maximum disk size. Where can I find this information?

Thanks!

There is also a limit in the kernel apparently. The disk shouldn't be a problem for linux though since you should be able to partition it using a partition tool then install linux into the smaller partition.

One solution would be to send me the 1.2 TB disk and I'll swap it for a nice 10GB one - that'll work! ;)

Looks as though the problem is something other than the hard disk size to me ??? How are you trying to use the drive?

Thanks for the reply. Problem is, I'm not to the point of creating a file system on this disk (actually, a LUN on a CLARiiON CX300 storage system). I've added a 1.2 TB LUN to the Linux system, and I'm just trying to boot it. When the boot process 'sees' the LUN, it gives the message I mentioned previously. Could it be that RHL 7.3, using the 2.4.21 kernel, can't support a disk that big?

Thanks

I'm afraid it's gotten out of my league now but it seems to me that the limit is 2TB for a filesystem (presumably the kernel should support this).

Do you have another LUN device already? Apparently the RedHat kernel is NOT compiled with the option CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN set ON as default (at least not in RedHat 9 anyway). I wonder if that could be giving you the error?

If the Linux box was working before you added the LUN, you could disconnect it again and then check your kernel config, recompiling if necessary?

how many FC channels are you using to connect the RH server to the CX300? are you using FC switches?

BTW, this is a solution from the EMC knowledgebase:

"What is the largest LUN on a CLARiiON array that a Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 can access?

A Linux kernel limitation will not allow a Linux host to access devices that are 1.1 terabytes or larger."

Take a look to the kernel version of your server and RH-AS 2.1.

Cheers.

Thanks for this information! How can I access the 'EMC knowledgebase'? Do you mean powerlink.emc.com?

Thanks!
