What is the maximum cell length in Excel 2000? I am writing a large text field to Excel and it seems to break it up into different cells after about 400 characters and then breaks everything beyond that into a separate cell for each sentence.

It will elt you enter 32767 chars, but, the max is 1,024 characters that you can see. You can extend this limit by entering manual linebreaks with ALT+ENTER

as per excel help file (press F1 and enter "specs")

Length of cell contents (text) 32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a cell; all 32,767 display in the formula bar.

Rgds, Geoff

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

I am automatically writing a paragraph to a cell and it seems to break it up with every full stop. Any idea why it might be doing this?

It may be quite elementary, Dr W.

Are you hitting enter after the period?

No, it is a paragraph that is being read from a database table.

There may still be a paragraph mark that follows. Enough for XL to think it should go to the next cell. You will need to remove para marks before pasting it and then use ALT/ENTER to create a paragraph.

I would use Word myself, instead.
