MAX(smallDateTime) returning 1/1/1900 1

Hello all --

Why would:

SELECT MAX(smallDateTimeField) FROM viewName

be returning 1/1/1900?????????

the view that I am using this on is a view of a view, if that has anything to do with it, but how would I get this to return the real max date from the view?

Welp... that didn't take long

had to CAST(field AS smalldatetime) in the view that I was viewing to get it to work.
