max number of fields

Hi,

I have product table , it has 40 fields , is it a bad thing to have that many fields?

secondly On one page , I have 4 select statements, is it bad pratice to have so many select statemnts, it may slow down the page?

You can have as many fields as you like; in fact it's a lot better to have hundreds of fields than to go splitting a table unnecessarily.

Regarding the number of SQL statements used to produce a web page, it is generally but not always faster to have as few statements as possible, but that depends on your particular circumstances. The best approach normally is to keep things simple and natural, and only worry about performance if it becomes or is likely to become an issue.
