My left and right master pages have different sized text boxes. When I add a page at the beginning of the document the left pages turn into the right and the right turn into the left!!! How can I add a page at the beginning of the document without changing the left and right master pages?

Thanks so much!!

I think I understand your issue...in order to add single pages but keep your spreads together you'll need to select all the spreads you want to stay together and then go to the pages menu and choose "keep spreads together" then you can add a single page anywhere in your document but your content will stay put. I used this in order to start my documents with a two page spread, page one being the left hand page in a spread instead of the single right hand page.

Thanks for the help, Clockwatcher. I've learned a lot playing with things...but still have not been able to solve the problem....but now the problem is more clear!

I actually don't want the spreads to stay together! I want to "allow the pages to shuffle." I'm writing a book, and I need to add a page at the beginning for an introduction.

When I add a page at the beginning of the document, the text shifts to the next page...just like I want.

The problem is that the text boxes on the right and left hand pages are slightly different sizes.....so when the text shifts to the next page, some of it is out of the text box.

What I need is to have the text move to the next page AND be forced into the text box.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for the help!!!

The only thing I can think is, which I'm sure you have already tried, is link your boxes so that the text will flow from your introduction to your first page in your spread and so on. Good luck!

If the book is going to be saddle stitch bound, you need multiples of 4 pages. If perfect bound, comb bound, spiral bound, etc, you need multiples of 2. That's why you see spreads and why the pages shift when you add one. The first suggestion, keeping spreads together, was proper and the easiest solution to your problem is to add 2 pages. Then think up something to put on the second new page.

If you have different sizied text frames and they are not set up to flow text from one page to the next, it is impossible to move the text from the bigger one to the smaller and have the text fit. The only answer is to go back and thread the frames since, I'm assuming, you didn't use a master text frame on the original document setup.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

Try this.

Turn OFF keeps spreads together AND allow pages to shuffle. Insert 2 page before the first page using the menu, not by dragging icons. This will create a 3 page "spread" with all right hand pages. If they are highlighted first click on page 4 or 5, then click on the first page in the spread. Move that to the left til you see a black bar. This will give you a right hand page by itself, followed by two right hand pages in a spread. Now, select the second page (should be blank) and delete it. Finally, if you want to make your new blank page a left hander, drag it to the left until you see a left pointing arrow (NOT the big black bar).

This worked for me. Hope it helps.
