Master Browser Conflicts

Hello all,

We have various Multi Server Sites running NT4. Since upgrading the infrastucture to 1GB we have installed new 3COM 1GB Server Cards, we have spotted a large number of BROWSER messages in event viewer.

Event 8021 & 8032 "The browser was unable to retreive a list of servers from the browser master \\Server1 on the network \device\NeBT_E10002.The data is the error code"
& "The browser service has failed to retreive the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NeBT_E10002. The backup browser is stopping"

Any clues as to what is triggering the above events.

Is it possible to just stop the BROWSER service on Servers 2 and 3 to solve the problem or is that too drastic?

You could, but as you say the browser service is designed to have backups on other machines so maybe it is a little drastic.

Try running BROWSTAT and/or BROWMON to see how the browser service is currently running.

I have checked with BROWMON from the NT Resource Kit and can confirm that Server1 is indeed the master browser. The strange thing is most of the browser messages are generated during the night when the network should be quiet!

There certainly doesn't seem to be any degregation on the network because of this (far as I can see)...just annoying seeing error messages in event viewer and being unable to explain why they are there.

How many do you get (roughly) per night would you say, is it complete spam?

Just dialed into the Server concerned and last night they had 10 entries of Event 8021 then 1 Event 8032 followed by 16 Event 8021, another 8032 then 9 Event 8021.

So that is a total of 35 Event 8021 "The browser was unable to retreive a list of servers from the browser master \\Server1 on the network \device\NeBT_E10002.The data is the error code" from 6pm till 4am. After that it seems to go quiet.!?!
