Hello
Has anyone ever used index cards or giant post it notes to get a group of people to map out tasks for a project? It seems like a great idea to help develop a plan but I'm unsure of how to facilitate it. Thanks
I haven't ... mostly whiteboard and large tear-off sheets just because they tend to be more readable at a distance in a small conference room.
But, having said that, I have seen PostIT notes with a Project task template pre-printed on them. I've just spent a few minutes trying to find them ... can't. But I did find this book Rapid Problem Solving with Post-It Notes which may help you out. I'm not connected to the book and I've never read it but I did come across several references on the internet so it may be useful to you.
If you do go this route, then please report back on your success and any lessons learned.
I've used normal size Post-Its... not ideal becasue they're really difficult to read from more than a few feet away. We stuck them on flip chart sheets, where each flip chart sheet was a sort of sub-project or whatever you want to call them. But it does work....
Then I sat with laptop after everyone went out and captured the tasks into MS Project.
Can get all fancy with different colours, too. Iirc, we once used one colour for stuff which we were going to have to do ourselves, another for stuff the client had to do (like walls and power) and another for stuff we'd sub out.

Use only one colour of post-its to start, so the team is not getting humg up on resourcing issues, which should come later. First do scope using a WBS, then do a network diagram.
