does anyone know how or if you can map drives past Z:, like AA: or BB: in XP ??
or does XP not support this function ??

thanks

Novell Netware allows (or allowed) this, using the next ASCII codes after the alphabet, such as [:, but I don't think Windows XP supports this without Novell, but I could be wrong. Anybody got a more certain answer? BlackburnKL

AFAIK, XP won't recognize any drives/partitions past Z.
Both W2K and XP allow deep mapping (don't know any better term).

If there is already a shared drive or folder, you can map a drive directly to one of it's subfolders.

Just type it in the Path field.

I just tried it and it worked, but not while utilizing the Administrative shares (ie \\computername\c$\games won't work but \\computername\c\games does...supposing you have a share named c)
Cheers,

As to why Windows even uses lettered drives excapes me. It's more confusing and harder to manage than mountpoints.

NT also uses the Z drive for network logons so if you have a Z drive, connect to a network with a logon script, you'll lose the Z drive.

MS did follow the Unix / Apple lead (like always) with mount points but it's still buggy which can be accessed under My Network Places

Question for you? Why would you need mapping for over 20 drives?? I would think that would get a bit confusing? I could be worng. I tried to make things simple.

the reason i ask, is that our organization is going through a pilot to convert all clients to XP. (roughly 2000 clients nation wide) and i'm on the client side team, so i'm thinking of questions and answers to bring to the table.

thanks for everyones input.

Don't do it..... I did a simple 50-client upgrade and now I have all kinds of problems with XP, I should have stayed with 2000 pro.

Losing network mappings, that nobody can figure out why. Working offline and files getting corrupted when they to synchronize.

My 2 cents

John
