Running Windows 2000 server, terminal services (application mode), RDP 5.0 Currently also running Citrix Metaframe 2000 using ICA.

Does Windows 2000 server TS RDP 5.0 allow client drive mapping and serial port mapping? Current TS client connection settings are:

Use connection settings from user settings is checked.

Disable the following:
Drive mapping is checked and grayed out.
Com port mapping is not checked and not grayed out.

We are looking at using 2X as alternative to Citrix. 2X uses RDP whereas Citrix uses ICA. Currently Citrix ICA allows drive mapping and com port mapping.

Am unable to determine how to accomplish same with RDP. Any help greatly appreciated.

I don't beleive drive mapping is supported in W2K TS, it is in W2K3.

I was able to use RDP client to connect a Win2K server to a Win2K3 server and map drives, so it does work. Is it possible the RDP settings on the server are set to prohibit accessing local drives?

Thanks for the replies thus far.
I concur that w2k does not allow drive mapping. I can probably get around this... but I cannot get around com port mapping.

Does anyone know if w2k, terminal services, rdp 5.0 allows for com port mapping or not?

Windows 2000 TS does NOT support com port remapping. That feature was added in 2003. You should upgrade to Windows 2003 Server.

On the up side, you would no longer need Citrix unless you are doing something obscure with Citrix. The TS in 2003 will redirect your local drives, printers, com ports and even sounds. So, you could eliminate the extra cost of Citrix licenses.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks Mark, this is what I believed to be true, but I had a vendor who insisted 2000 allowed com port redirection.
