mapping a drive to Netware from windows 2000

Help guys!

I have a windows 2000 server and currently have drive mappings to 2 remote Netware servers. However - I cannot map to the 2 other remote Netware servers on my WAN?

Is there something I need to setup at the Netware end? I can ping them so its not a comms issue?

Any ideas?

Can you map to them using IP Address? Eg. instead of MAP Q:=SERVER/VOL1:FOLDER try MAP Q:=192.168.1.1\VOL1:FOLDER

Thanks but tried that - it just says folder not found?

Can you browse to and open the folder you're trying to map? If not you may not have rights to the remote folder.

A good way to tell if it's a permissions issue...

Go to Windows Explorer and manually put in \\servername\

This should show you the server and you should be able to see all of the volume names. IF you then try to drill down into the volumes but can't, it's most likely that you don't have permissions.

I can ping to the server in question but when I try and map to a folder beyond the volume it can't find it? I checked the permission and the Admin user has full right in Netware and on the Windows domain...

The same user is able to see 2 other remote sites with the exact same permissions?

Anything else i can check?

Can you browse to and open the folder you're trying to map? We know you can't map it, can you browse it?

I can't browse any further than the top of the Volume of the two servers in question, wont show any directories underneath?
Have full permissions on all servers?

Apparently you don't have full permissions on that server, or you would be able to view the files.

What rights does your login have? Are you using equivalence to get them, or are your rights explicitly defined? If those servers are part of your tree, and you login as a trustee of [root], you will be able to view the files.

Another twist - our Consultant setup these w2k servers with Citrix and the Netware client that is supplied with w2k was installed.

I installed the latest w2k client for Netware and I was then able to see everything witht the Admin login? However this cases memory problems and renders the server useless?

Any ideas?

The Netware client supplied with W2K is crap. Only use the Novell supplied client. I have never seen the Netware client cause memory issues, and I have it running on several W2K servers.

My guess is that your problem has something to do with Citrix, about which I know nothing. You may need to install eDir on those servers and remove the Netware client.

Citrix... You install the Novell client just like you would on a regular Windoze server. Should download newest one from Novell at

I installed the very latest client - it can only be a citrix issue however it is strange that when we have client that is packed with the W2k server we are able to see 2 Netware servers on the WAN?? Thye are both setup the same as the 2 we cannot see??

IIRC, the W2K supplied Netware client only supports IPX. The Novell supplied Netware client supports TCP/IP as well.

This sounds more like it - is there a way of changing the W2k supplied client to see IP? or would I have to change my Novell servers in question?

No, the W2K supplied client doesn't support IP. You can setup IPX on the servers but that would be a lot of work...

You need to get the Novell supplied client working. You say it causes memory problems, can you be more specific?

also on a citrix server if you read the bumpf
you are suppose to install the client prior to install citrix

never had a problem installing after to be truthful but in the docs this is always clearly specified

somes to me like you need to install the proper netware client with only ip support and also fix your slp so that you can see stuff properly

oh and even ms dont recommend their own client - they ship it to p*SS people off and try to keep ipx alive to cause problems

You can't really call the W2K supplied "client" a client. It's a stripped down reverse engineered version that is intended to make NetWAre look like crap to discourage its use.

Our consultant didn't install the w2K Novell client before the citrix client which I think is causing these problems. Its just strange that we can see 2 of our 4 Novell servers (all setup the same) with the w2k netware client? thats what is making us pull our hair out.....
