Hi,

I've connected 2 PC's with W2K SP2 via a HUB. One PC is considered the master with a shared map. The other PC (client) has a mapped drive to that shared map. I'm running from the client an vb executable. This programm reads and writes info every 2 seconds (real-time application) from the master. These Pc's are Compaq
Problem : after x-time the connection is lost. I'm getting errors like bad-file record, can't find drive,...
on the support-site from microsoft there is some support on maps disconnection and compaq problems. I tried these out but the problem still exists.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Check out this: thread616-242287 Try what pbxman has described and see if that works.. Matt Wray

Hello Matt,

I have no server, it is just two PC's working in a workgroup with TCPIP protocol. the problem is the map is shared and the session stops after a period of time. This is why my program stops working. I have tried to change the policies, but i still cannot prevent the disconnecting Kurtie

What pbxman described should still work for you. Just replace \\servername with \\computername... Matt Wray

Hi,
Isn't that the same as mapping a drive in the explorer ?
if no can you explain the difference ?
Kurtie

I can't really explain the difference.. But from what I've read in the forums, this is a common prob- persistent mapping, and this is how I've seen it resolved.. That question would be better for one of the "gurus" like PBX... Matt Wray

kurty,

Some newer pc's have NICs that support being "Shut Down To Save Power". IBM laptops support this feature, and it's enabled by default!
Although you're using a Compaq, try this to see:
1.) Right click the "My Computer" icon.
2.) Select the "Hardware" button.
3.) Go down the list to "Network Controllers", and expand the category.
4.) Highlight your Ethernet Controller, and choose "Properties".
5.) If power-down features are supported, you'll either see a "Power Settings" tab, or perhaps an "Advanced" tab, (dependes on manufacturer), but click that tab!
6.) If power saving for the NIC is enabled, simply clear the checkbox.
Let Me Know!
:)

prescot9 You are right
the NIC on this new compaq pc's have an energy-saving feature. I turned this off. I will wait until monday
and see if its solves the problem.
I will let you know

Didn't work,
perhaps I must disable it on both sides. Unfortunally
I can't get access on the other PC, I must go on site for
that. So, this will take a couple of weeks
until then. Kurtie

Kurtie,

Sorry to hear that it didn't work, but of course, you are right, you will have to check the other PC, too - and disable it's power saving feature as well.
I didn't read the thread referenced by Matt, but I can tell you this:
Since you're using TCP/IP, it is often better to map a drive that exists on a "remote" PC using it's TCP/IP address, and then the "sharename" as follows:

net use x: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\share_name /p

Where "x" is the letter you want to use on the "local" PC for the "drive", "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", is the exact TCP/IP address of the "remote" computer, and "share_name" is the name BY WHICH THE REMOTE PC'S FOLDER IS SHARED.

The reason is because if you use a "name", then that name must be RESOLVED to a TCP/IP address. Using the address instead, should ensure the connection is made.

HOWEVER, if your "remote" PC is on a Network that assigns TCP/IP addresses automatically through a DHCP Server, then when the remote PC leases a "new" address, this method of mapping will no longer work. If you are sure that the remote PC's TCP/IP address is "statically" assigned, (it doesn't change), then this should work well.

Can yo ugive me more info on the remote PC? Is it on a Network of it's own? If so, does the "local" PC belong to the same Network? Are you using a VPN to connect, or do both PC's use "Dail-Up" connections to the Internet?

Maybe you should turn off the Auto Disconnect Function. I had this same problem with a 2000 Server about 2 days ago.

You can find the LAN Autodisconnect parameter in the registry under the subtree HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE under the subkey:

\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

The purpose is to disconnect idle sessions after a set number of minutes. The number of minutes can be set at a command prompt using the net config server command.

For example, to turn off the Autodisconnect value you would run the following command line:

net config server /autodisconnect:-1

here is a link on the microsoft website to check it out

The two pc's are simply connected with a hub between them. Just 2 ip adressess in a workgroup. No server or VPN nor dailup connection. No DHCP. the tip you gave about net use I will install it we will see what happens
thanks Kurtie

Hello there,

prescot9, this solved the problem thanks for the help.
In my applic i'v also have built-in error-trapping program's and it works fine know.

Same Problem, do this:

Goto My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - Offline Tab and Uncheck "Enable Offline Files"

Or

Goto My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - Offline Tab - Advanced Button and click "Never allow my computer to go offline" radio button
