Hey guys,

I'm trying to map a drive at login through the registyr, supplying the username and password, so that each time the computer boots up, itr maps the drive without prompting the user for a password. How can this be done?

Thanks in advance,

Lumstar

I'm not aware of a way to map them threw the registry.

The NET USE command is all that I use. If you want to save yourself some trouble, all network SHARES should be set to EVERYONE and the NTFS permissions for the folder should be set to be more restrictive. This way, you can map anyone to your network drives without needing a username/password, but the will still get access denied if the NTFS permissions aren't met.

You can then create a batch file and add it to the STARTUP folder for ALL Users. If you have access to the server, you can add it in the Login Script.

NET USE H: \\DC1\Path

You can add Username Password here if you like, but it's visible to everyone. Do NET USE /HELP and you'll get all the options you need to add to the batch/script file.

That would work, but the fact that everyone would be able to see passwords by opening the batch is a big problem. Any other ideas? Are you sure it can't be done through the registry?

Well, like I said eariler, if you set the network share to EVERYONE and change the NTFS permissions to reflect the security you want on that specific folder, then you don't need a username and password. If the account the person is logging with has NTFS rights to the data, then he/she will see it, if not, they get ACCESS DENIED, but they both can map the drive and you don't get any errors mapping it, even without the username/password.... This is much simpler (and safer!) then sending out a .REG with the modifications if it's even possible...

Plus, that is the whole purpose of it.... so why bother with the registry? It's up to you however.. .every network has their own way.

My problem is that this is a government commision secured network and I can;t touch any of the secutiry settings, I have to work within the boundaries they have set up.... Beyond net use you have no other ideas? Thanks for all of your help, they were good ideas.

Sincerely,

Ah, well I don't know any other way.. sorry. If you can't get the changes done on the server side, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas... especially if you need a username password to log in to that resource upon every connection.

I'm sure there is something out there that exists....

good luck.
