I've setup a linux machine as a firewall and although I can ping it by IP address (10.10.1.1) it won't respond by name ("Smoothwall"). I've got round that by adding an entry in the Hosts file but I think it would be easier (and more elegant) to add it's name somewhere in the DNS so that all PC's on the network could find it.
Does anyone know what I need to add ?

Thanks GKDOG

The ip adress you mention is a private adress. So you should add an entry to the internal DNS server. so if your domain is called domloc.com you would add an entry in DNS under forward lookup zones -> domloc.com -> make A-host entry "smothwall" pointing to 10.10.1.1

Thanks for the reply.......
I've made the entry that you suggested - but I still get the "Unknown host smoothwall" message.
Interestingly the other two PCs on the network are not showing up in the forward lookup zone either.
Should they also be there ? Is it necessary to add them manually ?

Appreciate the help

Do an NSLOOKUP of the IP of the smoothwall. Verify that that you are looking to the correct DNS server that you added the entry to.
From the other clients, run IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS. Then do an NSLOOKUP of their IPs and verify that they resolve...

Thanks Everyone
I had DNS on the clients pointing at the Smoothwall Server instead of the windows 2000 server - when I fixed that and updated DNS I could ping everything. (I manually added Smoothwall).
One of my clients is still not showing up in the DNS (don't know why) but everything now seems OK.

Thanks Again
