Hi,

I have Mandriva installed on an IBM. Everything works fine, but somehow it locks every night.
When I look in the morning, I only see a black screen. The keyboard is locked as well.

I cannot find any information in logfiles. It looks like the machine just hangs.

When I start the machin it oftens hangs while starting X.
Trying a few times always helps.

Main services installed are only:
Apache
mySQL

Does anyone has a glue on what's hapening?

have you tried to tail /var/log/messages? What about your X log file after a failed startup, I find it strange that you cannot pickup anything in any log.

Life is what happens when you are making other plans.

... no messages...it looks like nothing happens at all.
The X log doesn't show anything except that the last line:
"SetClientVersion: 0 9"
seems to be missing when booting fails.

Another thing I discovered: the keybpard hangs as well, but I can ping to the machine (from my XP client) and the httpd service works fine too.
When I want to switch off the server using the power switch, it shuts down immediately (usualy this causes linux to kill all processes, in this case power just shuts down)....

I had a similar problem. I never really found out what the problem was, but I set /etc/inittab to runlevel 3 (multi-user text) and my problem seemed to be solved. Maybe having X running was the problem...not sure.

I startx after the boot if I need to use it. Honestly, I haven't started X on any of my Linux boxes since they've been running. I run Linux clients and use the guis through ssh.

Well, yesterday I decided to remove Mandriva and install Suse.
It looks like that solved the problem as well..
