I have an AlphaServer400, 64 MB RAM, SCSI disks, SCSI CD-ROM and VT510 terminal as the console (no PC keyboard and no graphics card).

I have downloaded the Mandrake 7.1 ISO image and have burn a CD. The linux begins to boot, but hangs with the message "failed to open /dev/tty1".

Thanks

Hi,

Its stating the obvious perhaps but linux can't find the first virtual console (/dev/tty1). This is no doubt because you are using a dumb terminal connected to a serial port rather than a monitor connected to a graphics card. A normal linux install uses several virtual consoles at the same time that you can toggle to get different info. The following is a redhat doc but I'm sure Mandrake is the same --> .

Maybe someone else knows a way to overcome this without installing a graphics card....

Regards

I have installed Debian Linux. The kernel must be loaded with the kernel parameter "console=ttyS0". The terminal is attached to com1.

The tip has been found in the Debian istallation manual for Alpha at
I didn't try if it works with Mandrake too.
