i am having problems with assigning a management point for my sms site (sms v4).

In the Sms console when i go to SITE MANAGEMENT -> SITE SETTINGS -> COMPONENT CONFIGURATION -> MANAGEMENT POINT ->

MANAGEMENT PROPERTIES, the Management point drop down list box is empty with no server name.

I want to make the machine which has the sms site server running as the sms management point as well.

Could anyone please help me with this?

thanks

Hi Subi,

1.Bring up the console on the system you want to setup as a management point.

2.Navigate to the 'Site settings' folder and expand it.

3.Right click the system you want to turn into a MP and select properties.

4.Next you'll see several tabs where you'll select the MP tab.

5.In this view you can place a check in the box with the caption 'Use this Site System as a Management Point'

Let me know if this helps...

this is about V4, not 2003, the layout is slightly different.

consolename > Site Management > site > Site Settings > Site System Roles > instance > SMS Management Point > "use this site system as a management point"

Hope this Helps.

If its "greyed out" or blank I wonder if that means the needed components arent installed yet IE: IIS, BITS Havent played with it yet, but thats my uneducated guess :p

I have got that management point issue solved thanks to all you guys.

I have also connected a seperate PC workstation with windows XP on the same domain as the sms site server. I have made a package for ms word 2007 beta using the 'msi' installer as the definition. The PC workstation does appear on the Collections Node. I have also made the sms site server as the distribution point for the package and a management point. When i try to install the package to the pc workstation through the sms console using advertisements, nothing seems to happen.
Could anyone pease help me with this?

one more question, does anyone know where i can find 'sms' package definition files for ms office 2007 beta?

thanks

WOOH WOOH WOOH.....slow down
If you haven't even got the clients installed and appearing, what are you trying to run complex distributions for?

Have you configured the site boundaries?
Have you enabled Client Push Installation?
Have you specified a cleint installation account?
Have you manually pushed out the client?
Have you enabled the hardware inventory client agent?
Have you set up your Heartbeat, Network and Active Directory Systems discovery?

In regard to SMS files for the Office beta....if it's a BETA, ASAIAA, they don't produce package files for it. They should all be on the Microsoft site or AppDeploy.com, but ther eis nothing for a distributal deployment package for Office 2007B.

Hope this Helps.

Hi neil, you were right about the ms office 2007 beta sms setup files. I can't seem to find any sms package files for ms office 2007 beta which i can use to install on client workstations through my sms site. I did try creating package definitions out of the seperate .msi files in the CD but it didn't seem to install anything on the client.
So now iam trying to install ms office 2003 on client using documentation i found on the microsoft sms site. If you have any ideas about how to install office 2007 beta only through sms, please let me know. In the meantime i will play with ms office 2003 and google for office 2007 deployment.

Thanks again guys.

Wow, I think I better get cracking on V4 and download the Eval this weekend. I've been so busy with software remediation I forgot all about test driving the latest version. :)

You need to sign up to the Beta program, you cant just "download it" if I remember correctly.
There is no Evaluation version of V4...there is the evaluation version of SMS 2003 R2 though...but it's useless. lol.

Hope this Helps.

Thanks for this information, that tablet PC thing does sound like a fun challange however, I'm going through the sofricity module and I'll see what I can do about getting a hold of SMS v4

Thanks again for the info....

Its actually part of the beta programe, not an evaluation as such. You have to become part of the beta programe group, and will be authorised at some point in the future to be able to download it.

Hope this Helps.
