I would add a little more to jimoblak's suggestions.
Create some picture with a lot of white in it or take an existing picture of something that could appear in the reflection of the glass and then boost the contrast up to around +50. Then Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic (10 cells and up, but not too big) then on a new layer draw a black grid where the big pixels join, then merge all the layers and then Filter > Distort > Spherize (100%, normal) then use the ellipse marquee to cut out the circular ball.
Then you will just have to experiment with a bunch of different thing to get the ball look shiny and make light refract off it. Mess around with some quick masks and lens flares and lighting effects.
